Lesser Spotted Woodpecker (male) 12:30pm, 15th Oct 2013. Observed for five minutes amongst trees in garden at La Picaterre.

Also dead hedgehog 10m from end of track at Plat Cotil (Val du Saou corner) - no visible cause of death. (4th : 1pm)

Swallowtail butterfly sighted at the PO Sark today at 11 am. Had been there a good hour or so feeding on Buddleia davidii. One was spotted last year on 22nd August, so about the right time. We had one emerge from a chrysalis on 22 July 2011. The first record of a Swallowtail breeding in the Bailiwick.

While I was on holiday, I walked along the South coast, and unexpectedly found a swallows nest in the bunker which was refurbished with the help of BP. It was in a single store room, not the extensive set of rooms. I thought someone ought to know that a swallow was on eggs there so that they are not disturbed.

27/4-Corblets-2 c'mon swifts. Giffoyne-2 harrier sp.
28/4-Barrackmasters-c'mon.redstart-female/Cuckoo heard twice/pied fly.-male. Sewage fm.-Pied fly-female/ willow walrus again. Essex - nos house martins.

60 Razorbill and 30 Guillemot around Telegraph Bay and Coque Lihou this morning. Plus a lot of Shags and Fulmars flying around. All birds starting to settle at nest sites for the breeding season.
